Haiku's appealing character is of rustic charm and of being undeniably “off the beaten path.” The copious amounts of rainfall found in Hana provided water to the dry central Maui of the 1800's in order to quench the King crop of Hawaii, sugar. Remnants of the old sugar mills are still present. Sugar cane grows wild in some fields as a testament to the long history of sugar in Maui's agriculture and economy. A name well recognized on Maui is Alexander and Baldwin. It was in Haiku that Samuel Alexander and Henry Baldwin began Hawaii's largest sugar company.
